“Every environmental branding and wayfinding project is complex and our responsibility is to make the process as effortless as possible for the customer/user, as well as our clients. We have created some amazing tools that contribute to achieving these goals.”

In almost three decades as the CEO and Owner of GNU Group, Phil has had the chance to fully develop the Leadership Team that represents the next generation. Managing a creative practice is its own on-going design assignment and Phil has relished the opportunity to evolve the firm.  Professionally, his focus throughout his career has been adding to the efficacy of how people experience the built environment- particularly how they find their way.

Phil’s longtime involvement in environmental signage has included management, design/build partnering, consultation for design and manufacturing companies, and extensive participation in associations and industry groups. When Phil assumed ownership of the firm in 1994 he implemented his strategic vision of a total problem and creative resource providing design, program management and implementation for environmental branding, wayfinding, and signage programs.

One of Phil’s particular interests is wayfinding in healthcare environments. He is the architect of GNU’s Total Wayfinding System™, a comprehensive methodology that provides patients and visitors with all the tools and information to orchestrate every part of their journey and guide them to destinations within medical venues. This includes pre-arrival system information, both static and digital signage, plus a proprietary software training program for staff and new hires.

Phil has lectured on methodologies for collaboration between designers and manufacturers and has repeatedly demonstrated his effectiveness at managing large-scale projects and successfully contracting with manufacturers and construction companies to benefit the client. Phil has served as a board member of The Society for Experiential Graphic Design (SEGD) and is a member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI), SMPS, CoreNet, Alliance of CEOs, and Vistage.
