POINTING THE WAY

When you are asked for directions, understanding how much information can be grasped and recalled is crucial. You may need to ask questions of the person you are directing. They may not be using correct terms. By clarifying where they are going you can ensure that you are giving accurate instructions. The following pages present a number of examples of how to frame your response when asked for guidance. Remember, keeping the instructions simple, succinct and memorable is key. Always strive for the fewest number of steps possible. Three to four is about the maximum number of sequential directions one can easily remember.
