Maudelle Miller Shirek Community

GNU partnered with MWA Architects to design and document a comprehensive signage and environmental graphics program for a landmark mixed-use affordable housing development in Berkeley, CA, commissioned by Resources for Community Development (RCD).

Named for Maudelle Miller Shirek, a beloved South Berkeley City Councilmember and tireless advocate for the underserved, the project honors her legacy through a design approach grounded in deep respect for her story and community.

The graphics program includes a custom garage mural, exterior identification signage, a memorial plaque, custom floor numerals, and a full interior signage and wayfinding system. All elements are unified by artwork developed by GNU and inspired by the urban grid of South Berkeley, reflecting the neighborhood Shirek served so passionately.

GNU also collaborated with the nonprofit Healthy Black Families on tenant signage, further reinforcing the project’s connection to community.
